Leading Ohio Republicans have announced their support for a constitutional amendment allowing the issuance of up to $1.875 billion in new bonds for infrastructure spending across the state. The proposal would increase public works spending by $375 million over 10 years.

Introduced in the Ohio Senate as Senate Joint Resolution 6 (SJR 6), the plan was promoted by Senate President Keith Faber (R-Celina), House Speaker Bill Batchelder (R-Medina) and Governor John Kasich at a December 18 Ohio Chamber of Commerce event.

Sen. Faber described SJR 6 as a continuation of a $150 million annual bond program started in the 1980s and renewed in the 90s. Video of his speech is available courtesy of Youngstown Vindicator reporter Marc Kovac.

“We’re coming into the season that if we’re gonna continue this public works program — which essentially provides money for local infrastructure projects: for water, for sewers, for roads, for bridges, things that go, by district, to local governments all across the state — we need to ask Ohioans to consider renewing,” Faber told the Chamber crowd.
